Church of the Covenant
67 Newbury Street
Boston, MA 02116
Visible from Boston Public Gardens and conveniently located on the Green Line, The Church of the Covenant serves as both a gorgeous and convenient setting for all our musical endeavors.
Organizationally, The Covenant of the Church is affiliated with both the United Church of Christ and Presbyterian Church, but members of the public of all religious affiliations are welcome and encouraged to visit the historic sanctuary and partake in any cultural activities offered there (such as the wonderful Horizon Ensemble)!
FAQs
What is the best way to access Horizon Ensemble’s concerts at the Church of the Covenant ?
1
The Church of the Covenant building is conveniently located between the Copley and Arlington green lines and reachable by several public buses. Cheap Public Parking can be challenging to access so close to the Public Gardens, but paid parking at the Prudential Center is almost always available (cost: $25 for five hours).
Church of the Covenant is vocal about LGBTQ+ inclusion in their sanctuary. In 1995, the Covenant voted to offer marriage ceremonies to same-sex congregants and their website features a full LGBTQ+ affirmation statement.
One of the first statements available on Church of the Covenant’s website states “We are a community where ALL are welcome…—all genders, all races, all faiths, all orientations, all backgrounds, all abilities, all ages, all struggles, and all hopes.”
How open is the sanctuary to gay, transgender, gender-non-confirming, or otherwise queer visitors?
2
Very much so!
Church of the Covenant is a city church with a long history of operating as a secular cultural center or tourist attraction for Christians and non-Christians alike.
Not only are our concert-goers not expected to be Christian or have any background knowledge in Christianity, many members of our ensemble are Non-Christians/members of religious minorities, such as Judaism, Catholicism, Atheism, Agnosticism and more.
Our choice in venue is in no way idealogical; however we are very grateful to be able to perform at such a historic and beautiful space, and understand that this is a holy space for many people.
Is it okay to visit the sanctuary to attend a Horizon Ensemble concert if I’m not a Christian/Presbyterian?
3
Are there any precautions I should make to ensure I’m being religiously respectful while visiting Church of the Covenant?
4
As a religious meeting place, Church of the Covenant certainly deserves respect and reverance. While modesty and kind language are appreciated, there are no specific requests about how individuals dress or behave.
Largely, any behavior appropriate for attending a music recital, is equally appropriate for attending a Horizon Ensemble concert.
Are food and drinks allowed inside the sanctuary?
5
Out of respect for the sanctuary and those who call it their religious home, please be considerate about any potential messes you may make. We ask that if you wish to eat something during a concert, you do so on the sidewalk outside the Church.
Water is allowed inside the sanctuary, but we ask that all other drinks are likewise drunk on the sidewalk outside the sanctuary.
Is photography allowed inside the building?
6
Yes! Non-flash, non-disruptive photography is absolutely encouraged. If you happen to snap a particularly striking image, feel free to tag us at @horizonensemble on Instagram and we’ll probably share it on our Instagram stories!
