Meet Modest Mussorgsky! Born in Russia in 1839, Mussorgsky became known as one of "The Five," a group of Russian composers creating a uniquely Russian musical identity in opposition to established convention. His tone poem "Night on Bald Mountain" has a storied history! The original version, which we will be playing, was never performed in his lifetime. Mussorgsky's mentor Mily Balakirev refused to perform it, leading Mussorgsky to shelve the project for several years. He later attempted to reuse the material in the collaborative opera-ballet "Mlada," but this project never saw a performance either. His third and final attempt at using the material was as a "dream intermezzo" in his opera The Fair at Sorochyntsi, which was unfinished at the time of his death. In the years following his passing, his friends edited his unfinished works for publication, and the work commonly known as "Night on Bald Mountain" is almost always Rimsky Korsakov's edition of the piece, drawing on each of the three earlier versions. Meet the composer of Clouds of Disbelief, Stella G. Gitelman Willoughby! Recognized as an “Outstanding Musician” (IBLA Grand Prize, Italy), Stella G. Gitelman Willoughby is an ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award winner and a national and international award-winning composer from Cambridge, Massachusetts. Stella writes for symphony orchestra, large and small chamber ensembles, voice, and solo instruments. Valuing the unique qualities of each instrument and performer, her works highlight their individual sound. Working collaboratively with musicians, dancers, filmmakers, performance and fine artists, Stella embraces opportunities for her music to be performed in and heard by the public. She has received commissions for concert programs, recording projects, music festivals, dance, film, audition repertoire, performance and public art installations, student musicians, academic presentations, and to accompany historical and liturgical texts. Stella’s compositions have received awards and performances from the American Composers Orchestra and ROCO – Houston Chamber Orchestra, Yale School of Music’s Norfolk New Music Workshop, LunART, The American Prize, National Association of Composers/USA, and the National Association for Music Education, among others. Her compositions are licensed in the US and around the world. Stella is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, summa cum laude. She is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Meet the composer of "h.a.g.s., countess báthory :)" reinier potgieter! reinier potgieter is a composer whose music is characterized by a severe preoccupation with ‘softness’ and its gradations. his music is an invitation to explore a dynamic extreme that is fully at odds with the tumult of everyday existence. reinier is dedicated to cultivating a listening experience that provokes introspection; a listening experience that engages those parts within us that don’t want to be exposed; the experience of a moment that can only exist when and where you are. reinier obtained his bachelor’s from boston conservatory at berklee, where he studied and grew with curtis hughes, marti epstein, and tina tallon. he also obtained his master’s from manhattan school of music, where he blossomed under the tutelage of nirmali fenn and reiko füting.
